Some sea turtles have been known to swim 1900 miles in 23 days against a current. Kemps and Olive Ridleys nest in large daytime groups called an “arribada.”
Many of the Brevard nesting sea turtles arrive from the Florida Keys & Florida Bay. Sea Turtles navigate using small differences of the earths’ magnetic field, similar to GPS. They can travel thousands of miles without a map.
Over 60% of Florida beaches have turtle surveys done daily during the season, with the help of more than 3000 unpaid volunteers.
Florida counted 96,000+ turtle nests in 2018 on surveyed beaches.
